Thursday, October 17th, was another opportunity for us at Afrokings, your local community Barbershop with a safe space in the heart of Middlesbrough, to host our coffee morning. We had a memorable collaboration with Cleveland Police, bringing together the community to address important issues such as the role of community police officers, experience with the community, interaction, and hate crimes. This initiative was primarily focused on raising awareness of the impact of hate crimes while highlighting the need for unity and support in combating them.

Cleveland Police officers, including Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Steve Cook, provided invaluable insight into how these crimes affect individuals and communities and how they can be reported and prevented.

The event also underscored the importance of creating safe spaces for men to talk and share their experiences. Afrokings Barbershop has long been a hub for men in the community, and this partnership with Cleveland Police amplified its role in encouraging open discussions about mental health, signposting individuals to opportunities, co-creation, discrimination, and local concerns. By working together, both the Barbershop and police aimed to foster trust and ensure that everyone felt supported.

Community policing initiatives like this coffee morning highlight the benefits of close social interaction with local law enforcement. These events help break down barriers, allowing residents to connect with officers in a relaxed setting and promote a sense of security and collaboration.

A special thank you to PSCO Steve Cook for bringing everyone together, for his dedication to community policing, and for sharing his expertise. Stick and Stone Studio for their unwavering support and for shining a light on issues everyone at the heart of the community. And to our amazing customers, we can only do this because of your support and willingness to show up everytime.

We look forward to future opportunities to work alongside Cleveland Police and continue building a stronger, more connected community.
